SHINING A LIGHT ON BLACK HISTORY IN OKLAHOMA
Oklahoma Black History is continuing to tell the tragedy and triumph of the state’s Black community through the launch of their new website: oklahomablackhistory.org.
The website documents Oklahoma’s rise as a place of promise for Black people during the early 1900s and follows the course of history through the century. From the Greenwood District in Tulsa to the Deep Deuce in Oklahoma City to more than 50 All-Black settlements and towns across the state, Oklahoma has significant Black history to share.
The new site also focuses on social change, highlighting the importance of Clara Luper and the Sit-In Movement as well as the presence of slavery and Freedmen along the Trail of Tears, which was the forced removal of Native Americans off their sacred lands.
