ABOUT OUR AUTHOR & FEATURED BOOK

Linda Villarosa is an award-winning journalist and public health expert, known for her work on race, inequality, and health. She is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and the author of Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives and on the Health of Our Nation. Villarosa’s groundbreaking 2018 article on Black maternal and infant mortality brought national attention to racial health disparities. Her book, Under the Skin, exposes the impact of racism on public health, highlighting the systemic forces that cause Black Americans to "live sicker and die quicker." It was named one of the best books of 2022 by NPR, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, and became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

A former executive editor of Essence Magazine, Villarosa has written extensively on health disparities in Black communities, including HIV/AIDS, environmental justice, and life expectancy gaps. She was a key contributor to The 1619 Project, addressing racial myths in medicine, and her work has been recognized with numerous awards, including from the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association and the American Medical Writers' Association.

Villarosa teaches at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY and City College of New York.
